Some old new things are new again! During the time of coronavirus, people are looking for things to do while maintaining social distance. Drive-in theaters are opening back up to serve that need!

We’re lucky to have four drive-in theaters within an hour’s drive of Rockford, Illinois!

The McHenry Outdoor

Address: 1510 Chapel Hill Rd., McHenry, IL

Opening Day: May 8, 2020
Open on weekends only

Upcoming shows: ET and Jaws – May 22 – 28

Showtimes: Gates open at 6:30 pm, first movie starts at 8:15 pm, second movie starts at 10:15 pm

Cost: $12 per adult, $6 per military/senior, $6 for kids, FREE for kids 3 and under

Concessions: The concession stand is closed, but popcorn, candy and beverages will be available to purchase from snack carts in the parking lot. They are also allowing outside food to brought in during this time.

How they’re following the recommendations:

McHenry Drive-In is only allowing half capacity (350 cars) and requests that customers stay in their vehicles. Vehicles will be parked 12-16 feet apart. Face masks must be worn by customers who are in open backs of vans or truckbeds. Restrooms will be open with social distancing measures in place.

The box office opens at 6:30 pm during business days, but demand is very high and people are waiting for hours to buy tickets to nightly shows. Be aware that there will be a long wait.

Midway Drive-In Theater

Address: 91 Palmyra Rd., Sterling, IL

Opening Day: May 22, 2020

Upcoming shows: Grease and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – May 22-25
ET & Back to the Future – May 29 – 31

Showtimes: ~8:30 pm and ~10:30 pm

Cost: $9.50 per adult (12 and older), $4 per kid (3 to 11 years old) FREE for kids 2 and under

Concessions: The concession stand is closed, but you can bring your own food if you buy a $10 food permit.

How they’re following the recommendations: Midway Drive In is not opening their concession stand. Instead, all cars must purchase admission tickets and a food permit to get in. Reserve tickets and food permits here.

Route 34 Drive In

Address: 4468 East 12th Rd., (Old Route 34), Earlville, IL

Opening Day: May 15, 2020

Tickets cannot be bought online, they are first come, first serve

Concessions: Limited menu

How they’re following the recommendations: Route 34 Drive In is requiring masks at all times, one car per pole, keeping social distancing and a maximum of 175 cars. Restrooms will follow social distancing protocols. They are cash only.

Sky Vu Drive In

Address: N1936 WI. State Hwy 69, Monroe, WI

Opening Day: June 12, 2020

Showtimes: Gate opens Friday and Saturday at 7:15 pm, Sunday at 7:45 pm

Cost: $10 per adult, $6 per kid

Concessions: Concession stand will be open for purchase, but you must take your own trash home. You cannot bring in outside food. They offer hotdogs, hamburgers, popcorn, drinks and more.

How they’re following the recommendations: They will only be one car per stall, keeping social distancing. The bathrooms will be open.
