Here in the Stateline, there are many events especially for families with special needs and different abilities to enjoy. These events may be held before or after hours or take place at one of the area’s support centers. We’ve rounded up these events in our new monthly calendar for families with special needs in the Rockford area.

These events often require pre-registration so please make sure to read all the information below. All events are free unless otherwise stated.

Cheer Gems Practice @ Gigi’s Playhouse

Cheer Gems promotes confidence and gives your child the opportunity to participate on a cheer squad and have shared experiences with their peers. Suitable for ages 9 years and older. RSVP by calling the Playhouse at 815-654-7529.

Tuesdays from 5:00 – 5:45 pm
Karate Kickers @ Rockford Plaza

This program will focus on the development of balance, focus, coordination, discipline, fitness, and confidence. There will be no physical contact between peers; participants may kick and punch pads. This class will be held at the Rockford Plaza and led by Jamie Potter, a trained instructor with over 20 years experience. Recommended for ages 10-21 years old. Sensory Storytime @ Ida Public Library
320 N. State, Belvidere, IL

Engage your senses and explore! This inclusive and interactive storytime is full of repetition, rhyme, and sensory play choice for children of all abilities. For ages 0-6.

Fridays (September 14 and 21) from 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Friends, Fun, and Fitness @ Gigi’s Playhouse

Run, jump, play, and get active at this new program! This program will promote gross motor skills and physical fitness through exciting and interactive group games and exercises. Suitable for ages 9-12 years old. Led by Mary Von Arx. Parents must stay with their child at this program. RSVP by calling the Playhouse at 815-654-7529.

Portal Theater Troupe Practices @ GiGi’s Playhouse

GiGi’s Playhouse and Gateway Performing Arts are proud to partner together for a production of Charlotte’s Web. This program is designed to give participants a chance to take the stage!  Program generously provided by The Rockford Area Arts Council. Suitable for ages 10 years and older. Rehearsals: Saturdays 1-3pm. Performances: November 30 and December 1 at Nordlof Theater. RSVP by calling the Playhouse at 815-654-7529.

Bubble Festival @ Discovery Center Museum
711 N. Main Street, Rockford, IL

Special free performance for families with children with disabilities or special needs.
Renowned Bubbleologist Geoff Akins creates awesome bubble displays. The show theme is Anything is Possible. The show is approximately 30 minutes long and families are welcome to play in the museum or Bubble-PaLooza Playground afterward. Space is limited, email sues@discoverycenter.org to reserve a spot.

Mornings of Fun @ Discovery Center Museum
711 N. Main Street, Rockford, IL

Free entry to the museum before opening for children with disabilities. The Blazer Foundation and Discovery Center Museum invite children with disabilities and their immediate families to experience Discovery Center’s multi-sensory exhibits and activities free of charge before the museum opens to the general public. A healthy snack will be served at 10 a.m., and families are welcome to stay and play after the museum opens to the public. Event is free, but advanced registration is required. LMNOP/Walkers, Crawlers, Leaps & Bounds @ GiGi’s Playhouse

LMNOP guides parents and infants through learning basic sign language and incorporating music into daily activities to stimulate the child. Suitable for ages 6 months to 4 years old. Led by Amy Dalke. Crawlers, Walkers and Leaps & Bounds helps strengthen gross motor skills and will incorporate fine motor skills, sensory awareness and social interaction. Sensory Storytime: A Storytime for Children with Special Needs @ Rockford Public Library
214 N. Church Street, Rockford, IL

Storytime for children with special needs, ages 3-7. Participants in this storytime will actively take part in stories, songs, and movement activities. There will also be a time for sensory play at the end of each session. This storytime is designed for children with sensory issues or other special needs, ages 3-7. Rockford Park District Fall Programs

The Rockford Park District is currently registering for their Therapeutic Recreation Fall programs. You can view the list of programs available and register here. Options for kids and teens include buddy soccer, buddy skate, fall camp, and teen social club.
